On July, 25th, 2018, “Technical Workshop on Integrated Waste Management and solution to reduce open burning Activities ” was held  at the Trade Union Hotel, 14 Tran Binh Trong Street, Hanoi,Vietnam. The workshop was attended by professional stafftechnical staff of the communes and districts which is the hot spot of recycling activities, waste treatment, Department of Natural resouces and environment  and Enterprises operating in the field of waste collection and treatment.

Air pollution from open burning during recycling activities is one of the major challenges in environment management of recycling craft village. These open burning actions not only  immediate consequences such as air and smoke pollution, local temperature rising, but also long-term public health risk due to the rising of persistent organic pollutant(POP)  that persist in the environment a long time. “Technical Workshop on Integrated Waste Management and solution to reduce open burning Activities” was held for the purpose of improving awareness to reduce  open burning  activities in waste recycling. The workshop was held by  Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication (CNREC) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in collaboration with the  management Unit of the project:”Demonstration of best available techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practice (BEP) in open burning activities in response to the Stockholm convention on Pops”.

With the message ” Reducing open burning activities for the protection of the environment and health”. In this workshop, the participants discussed the following issues: Review of legal regulations on management solid waste, POP containing wastes related to oppen burning activities in Vietnam ; Composition of solid waste, and POPs formation due to open burning activities; BAT / BEP in solid waste treatment technologies to reduce unintentional persistent organic pollutants (U-POPs) due to open burning; Sharing information on supporting resources, loans to improve environmentally friendly production technology. In the afternoon, the participants went to visit at the waste treatment industrial power plant (Nedo Factory) at Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex, Soc Son district, Hanoi, Vietnam.

The technical workshop attracted nearly 100 participants from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; environmental managers in craft villages; Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Red River Delta provinces such as Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hanoi; Farmer Associations, Youth Unions from localities; Enterprises operating in the field of waste collection and treatment.

The Technical Workshop on Integrated Waste Management and solution to reduce open burning Activities  is an activity within the framework of the project “Demonstration of best available techniques (BAT) and best Environmental practice (BEP) in open burning activities in response to the Stockholm convention on Pops “funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the participation of five countries, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia and the Philippines. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is the lead agency of the project and Waste Management Department – General Department  in charge of implementing the project; by  Center for Natural Resources and Environment Communication (CNREC)  implement  Component 4 – Training and Awareness.

The project encourages, supports application of advanced and modern technologies, clean technologies, environment friendly and the best environmental protection experiences to reduce and eliminate the emission of  persistent organic pollutant that formulating (UPOP), is one of the priority projects under the National Plan Implementing the Stockholm Convention in Vietnam. The objective of the project is to reduce unintentional persistent organic pollutants  emissions (UPOP) in efficiently and sustainable open burning activities.
